Domestic violence is violence or abuse in marriage or cohabitation.

Domestic violence can take place in heterosexual or same-sex relationships, or between former spouses or partners.

Domestic violence also involves violence against children, parents, or the elderly. Domestic violence is delivered in many forms including physical, verbal, emotional, economic, religious, reproductive, and sexual abuse, which can range from subtle, coercive forms to marital rape and to violent physical abuse such as choking, beating, female genital mutilation, and acid throwing that results in disfigurement or death.

The Esther Foundation facilitates an extensive residential young women's health, development and leadership program. There are ten residential premises based around South Perth.

The program is full-time and offers intensive support and assistance to young women in a safe and structured environment.

The broadly structured program facilitates group and individual counselling for issues and concerns faced by young women such as:

  • substance abuse
  • sexual and emotional abuse
  • domestic violence
  • mental health
  • teenage pregnancy
  • self harming
  • eating disorders
  • family breakdown
  • depression

The criteria for assessment to enter the young women's residential health, development and leadership program is that the prospective participant be aged between 13 - 33 years of age.
